Introduction to Encaustic Workshop

I have been working with this amazing medium for over 15 years and I am still learning new tricks and techniques to this day. You would be hard pressed to find another medium with as much versatility as encaustic.  When I first started out I had to learn from books and experimentation and it was a long road to mastering the technique so I am excited to help other artists accelerate their learning process and get off to a strong start with encaustic.

This is a 3 hour workshop giving an overview of the magical and multi-faceted nature of encaustic painting in my studio space.  I will help you get started in learning the basics in a totally accessible way.  The maximum number of participants is 2 people to allow for ample personal attention and instruction.  We will go over the fundamentals of working in this medium and will have a chance to explore multiple mixed media techniques. You will learn how to melt, mix, apply, and fuse the wax to create smooth and textured surfaces as well as how to incise the wax.  We will go over the making of your own encaustic medium and how to set up your own encaustic studio. We will cover combining oil paint, pastels, metal leafing,  and watercolors,  as well as different ways to incorporate collage and photocopy transfers.  There will be time for demonstration, discussion and most importantly, hands-on exploration. You can bring xerox prints of photos, sketches, papers, or other items for collage if you wish. I also have a collection of old magazines  and handmade papers that you can use. Each participant will take home two small scale paintings.
