This winter collection is the first chapter in an ongoing seasonal series: a study of transition, memory, and the emotional language of place.

Winter has always been a complicated season for me. It begins with novelty- the first snowfall, the pull toward creating comfort and beauty within our daily routines. There is more time to read and reflect. Bundling up for a walk in the woods feels like an adventure that brings clarity and inspiration.

By February, my energy often dips and staying connected to creative flow becomes more of intentional effort. Yet even then, the architecture of bare branches against an illuminated sky stops me in my tracks. A single house with a glowing window against the cold world outside becomes a quiet symbol of refuge. Light is fleeting in winter, but it feels more essential. Sunrise and sunset flare briefly across the horizon, small, radiant reminders of warmth and hope.

Working in encaustic, oil paint, and gold and silver leaf, I build each painting through a process of layering and removal. Fusing wax, scraping back, and rebuilding, echoing winter’s own cycle of reduction and refinement.

These works examine refuge, resilience, and the clarity that emerges when excess falls away. They are meditations on light within darkness, on the enduring presence of warmth even in the starkest landscapes.
