Winter Blues 11"x14" mixed media encaustic

I have to admit, I have a complicated relationship with winter. It shifts from year to year, depending on my mental, emotional, and physical reserves heading into the season. Some winters, I’m able to move through it with relative ease without too much grumbling or angst. When that happens, I’ve noticed a clear pattern.

The common denominator seems to be how intentionally I’m being with my time: how often I’m channeling my creativity, carving out time for stillness and prayer, and making space to get outside and walk. Watching the sun rise as I drive my daughter to school, and catching a glorious winter sunset at day’s end, feel like perfect bookends to a short winter day - little moments that allow me to gather as much light and beauty as I can.

Nesting also plays a vital role in keeping my spirits up. Creating a cozy, beautiful home is an ongoing project for me, especially in the colder months. I love being surrounded by artwork, unique objects, handmade pottery, stacks of books, and sentimental photographs - anything that brings meaning and personal history into a space. Visuals that spark emotion and depth, and invite me to return again and again, are the ones I’m most drawn to.

I believe more than ever that people will continue to value creations made by the human hand - by someone with lived experience and a soul behind the work. I’m deeply grateful to be working in the medium of encaustic. It feels like one of the most organic, tactile, and sensory-rich art forms there is, and I’m fairly confident there won’t be any robots making encaustic paintings anytime soon.

The creation of these nine new winter landscapes - some featuring houses glowing like beacons of light in the darkness, many set in that quiet, transitional time of day I love so much - has carried me through the heart of this winter. I’m so excited to finally share them with the world. They will be available in my website shop at the end of February, so be sure you’re signed up for my email list to receive all the details!
